Designed by York-based artist and educator, Sarah Haskell, the Mandala Community Weaving Project serves as a visual symbol of community, composed of three units:
The Mandala Circular Loom: The base for the project, woven by the community with strips of fabric or felt.
Clothespin Self-portraits: Created by individual participants using old-fashioned clothespins, assorted fabrics, notions, and collage materials. Attached to the loom when the weaving is complete.
Ribbons: Signed by each participant with their name and a message, and attached to the artwork at the very end.
As a creative process, this project grows from the spirit of the group that creates it. From the colors, to the representations of the people, to the texture of the weaving, the completed artwork is a true reflection and celebration of the community.
Our York River mandala pulls its colors from the Wild & Scenic York River outside our gallery windows. Messages on the ribbons are inspired by the theme of this year’s local student art showcase: Why I love York.
WE NEED YOU! This project is created by and for you, our local friends and neighbors, and doesn’t exist without your participation. Stop by for a few minutes or a few hours and share your creativity. All are welcome.
