YORK RIVER MANDALA

An ongoing community art project
Facilitated by Sarah Haskell, fiber artist & educator

Workshop // Thursday, February 19, 10am-12pm
Participation is free and open to all!

Sarah Haskell designed the Mandala Community Weaving Project to serve as a visual symbol of community. Over the last twenty years she has presented the project to audiences of every age group and ability, in hospitals, schools, community organizations, festivals, and elsewhere.

The project is composed of three units:

  1. The Mandala Circular Loom: The base for the project, woven by the community with strips of fabric or felt.

  2. Clothespin People: Created by individual participants as self-portraits, using old-fashioned clothespins, assorted fabrics, notions, and collage materials. Attached to the loom when the weaving is complete.

  3. Ribbons: Signed by each participant with their name and a message, and attached to the artwork at the very end.

As a creative process, this project grows from the spirit of the group that creates it. From the colors, to the representations of the people, to the texture of the weaving, the completed artwork is a true reflection and celebration of the community.

Our York River Mandala pulls its colors from the wild & scenic York River outside our gallery windows.
Messages on the ribbons are inspired by the theme of this year’s local student art showcase: What I Love About York.
