ABOUT THE ARTIST

Sarah Haskell’s work pursues the beauty and heartache of fleeting experience. Using forest, field and sea as the source of her palette, she dyes linen, paper, rayon, and cotton threads with plants and minerals. She weaves, embroiders, nets, and crochets these threads —sometimes into fabrics, enveloping beach stones, or incorporating other organic matter—in pieces that evoke cosmic formations, a mystical sense of the natural world, and maternal acts of love and safeguarding. Haskell asks, “What if our bodies know they are made of elements begun as stars?”

Sarah Haskell is an award-winning artist and educator who has been weaving and teaching for over fifty years. She is a 2021 Maine Artist Fellow and the recipient of the 2025 Maine Craft Artist Award. Her work was also selected for the 2025 Maine Biennial at the Center for Maine Contemporary Art. Haskell lives and works in York, Maine.
