Curated by artist Bri Custer, Place presents the work of five New England plein air painters investigating the relationship of their work, both individually and collectively, to the idea of place. Why paint the landscape? How does a plein-air mentality influence studio-based work? What are the commonalities between the way each artist relates to the landscapes they paint? Meeting for virtual discussions monthly over the past year, they have explored these themes in community with one another. Across this group, plein air painting is an act of developing a reciprocal relationship with the landscape. The artist picks the place, and the place picks the limitations: weather, tide, quality of light, and intrusive insects. They work within these limitations, translating place through their individual approaches to color, composition, and mark-making. Sustained observation begets familiarity, and the paintings become artifacts of the process.

Place is on view October 7 - November 19, with an opening reception Saturday, October 14, 5-7pm.
