Emily Barton

My works draw from a romantic sensibility shaped by my rural New England upbringing, where the cycles of growth and decay in the natural world left a lasting visual and psychological imprint. Each painting begins with photographic reference— images of petals, leaves, stems. Through a process of layering, obscuring, and revealing, those forms become less identifiable as references to the natural world, inviting the viewer to experience them as fragments of time, emotion, or place rather than just concrete subjects.

Emily Barton studied at Kenyon College in Ohio. She currently lives and works in Maine.
