My objects are all constructed with Baltic birch plywood and then veneered with wood. I view wood as the main character and use grain pattern and color to inform my compositions. My work focuses on ideas of visual perspective, balance, and perception. I play with these through formal elements and try to create tension and resolution, and illusions of dimensionality and flatness. This is often achieved by deliberate use of grain direction, non-rectangular forms, and shading.
My work is about how it takes time and investigation to understand; questioning first impressions and avoiding the pitfalls of ignorance and arrogance; meditating on something to practice the art of observation; and ultimately it is about learning how to recognize balance and harmony.
