When I set out to paint, I revisit familiar landscapes and look again and again. What I see is simultaneously the same and brand new each time. The time of day, direction of light, and change of seasons around Penobscot Bay and farther downeast guide me in the making of paintings. I meet nature and we work together to create something new to mark the day in its uniqueness. Natural patterning and familiar landforms are surrounded by air and light, as am I when I'm working outside, where I love to be. I believe the landscape notices me in return and we create an experience together. It's a satisfying process and one that supports and comforts me.

  • My paintings are memoirs of my experiences with nature. Through painting I participate in the landscape, recognize transcendent moments in nature, honor the integrity of natural forms, and describe where my heart lives. I often feel as if the places I paint have commissioned me to tell their autobiographies, at the same time that I tell my own.

I was born and raised on the coast of Maine, studied art history and painting at Colby College and the University of Maine, and now live and work as a professional painter in midcoast Maine. I’ve attended residencies at Weir Farm National Historic Park, Acadia National Park, Monson Arts, and on Great Spruce Head Island. My work is featured in Drawing New Audiences, Expanding Interpretive Possibilities: Artist-in-Residence Programs of the National Park Service (U.S Department of the Interior 2009); was selected for the 2011 Portland Museum of Art Biennial and the 2025 Center for Maine Contemporary Art Biennial; is included in the book Art of Acadia by David Little and Carl Little (Down East Books 2016, 2023), and in the Littles’ book Art of Penobscot Bay (Islandport Press 2024). In 2021 I published a memoir about painting on Bear Island in Penobscot Bay, entitled Autobiography of an Island. I’m currently working on a second memoir entitled The Ocean of Trees and an illustrated book In Residence.
